Things to Do in Benbrook in Late Summer This Year

August 6, 2026

For years, a Benbrook Saturday meant a drive somewhere. Camp Bowie for dinner, the Trinity Trails for a real ride, Sundance Square when guests were in town. That reflex is quietly breaking this summer. A restaurant park is landing on Benbrook Boulevard, the 18th Annual Heritage Fest is set for September 19 at Dutch Branch Park, and the fourteen miles of trail wrapping the lake have never been better mapped for people who actually live inside the 76126.

This is a resident's read on late summer, written for the people who already know which turn off US-377 is theirs. The point is not to sell you on Benbrook. It is to help you use the next eight weeks well.

The Boulevard Is Finally Getting A Corner Worth Meeting At

The southwest corner of Benbrook Boulevard and Westpark Drive has been a placeholder for years. That changes this year. MAD Concepts Group, working with the Benbrook Economic Development Corporation and Blue Plate Network, is opening a restaurant park at 9300 Benbrook Drive that pairs Jakes Burgers and Tacos & Avocados on a shared 1.5-acre site.

The format matters more than the tenants. Each restaurant occupies its own building of roughly 4,000 to 5,000 square feet, with full bars and expansive patio seating, and the two share a backyard that reads as a small park rather than a parking strip. The project is expected to create up to 150 new jobs, which for a town this size is not a rounding error.

Two things to know before you go.

  • Jakes is not a new-to-DFW arrival. It has been around since 1985, and the chain currently has 13 locations, including Aledo, Flower Mound, Frisco, Grand Prairie, Grapevine, Mansfield, and Fort Worth's Sundance Square. The Benbrook build is a known quantity, not a test kitchen.
  • Tacos & Avocados is the newer bet. It is a chef-driven concept with tacos, shareable plates, salsas, and a full bar, and the menu includes fajitas, enchiladas, queso, guacamole, chorizo nachos, street-style corn, and tortilla soup. The Benbrook location is only the second the operator has opened.

If you have been asking why Chick-fil-A and Cracker Barrel do most of the work of feeding Benbrook Boulevard on a Friday night, this is the answer forming a block away. Carter Wilson of Blue Plate Network described the site selection plainly, saying "Benbrook stood out because it's a town with strong community pride and real momentum. When we look for new markets, we look for places that want us to be a part of their community as much as we want to be a part of theirs."

One other opening deserves a mention because it sits close enough to count. The "Patch Cafe" space featured on the TV series Landman is being turned into a full-service Texas-themed restaurant, set to open later this year, with classic Texas fare including steaks and chicken-fried steaks prepared by the culinary team at River Ranch Stockyards. It sits with Rosebuds Picnic Supply, a premium ice cream shop opening this summer with sandwiches and salads, inside a neighborhood retail center at 9840 and 9812 Camp Bowie West Blvd. that his family built in 1951, positioned between Fort Worth and growing communities like Aledo, Benbrook, Veale Ranch, and Walsh Ranch. For the west-Benbrook households, that is a five-minute drive.

September 19 Is The Day You Block Off

Every town has an event that quietly organizes the calendar. In Benbrook, it is Heritage Fest at Dutch Branch Park. This year is the 18th, and the date is set.

The city describes the day as a full afternoon and evening of western-themed programming, with live music, community performances, mechanical bull riding, a petting zoo, mini golf, interactive competitions, a chuckwagon dinner, and a street dance. Two competitions that fill up early are worth registering for now.

The Dog Costume Contest is returning to the 18th Annual Heritage Fest on September 19, 2026. Registration is free, and children ages seven and under are invited to run the barrels at Dutch Branch Park that same day.

That is a paraphrase of the city's own event page, but the specifics matter for planning. If you want in on the Corn on the Cob Eating Competition on Saturday, September 19 for a chance to win cash prizes, registration is free but space is limited, and sign-ups close August 31. Mark that deadline the same week the kids go back to school, or it will pass.

The venue itself is the other reason to think of Heritage Fest as an anchor rather than an event. Dutch Branch Park is a 275.2-acre park with the beloved Castle Park playground and unique Robot Park climbing structure, wide open green spaces, a duck pond, walking trails, and picnic areas. On a normal Saturday it is where families do birthdays. On September 19 it becomes the town square Benbrook does not otherwise have.

The Lake Is Bigger, And More Usable, Than Most Residents Realize

Ask ten Benbrook homeowners what the lake is for and you will get ten answers, most of them variations on "fishing" or "the boat ramp." The trail system is the underused half. Part of the National Trails System, Benbrook Lake offers a fourteen-mile equestrian and hiking trail, with trailheads in Dutch Branch Park, Holiday Park Campground, and Westcreek Circle, while passing through the Holiday Park Dayuse Area. That is a real distance. It is longer than the flat section of the Trinity Trails most Fort Worth residents ride.

A few resident-level notes that keep coming up in late summer.

  • The main hiking segment out of Dutch Branch is the Benbrook Lake Trail, roughly 6.1 miles, multi-use and accommodating horseback riding and hiking, mostly an equestrian trail and wide and relatively flat with a couple of sections of rolling hills. It is a beginner-friendly distance if you break it into an out-and-back.
  • The River Equestrian Trail is closed until further notice, and all Day Use Parks and their shorelines close at 9 PM, with recreation in Day Use Parks after 9pm strictly prohibited, including fishing, camping, and trails. Plan sunset accordingly. In late August, that gives you a comfortable evening walk after dinner. By late September it starts to bite.
  • Baja Beach, located along Benbrook Lake, is popular for fishing, relaxing by the water, and picnicking, and Benbrook Stables offers guided horseback rides along scenic trails near the lake for riders of all experience levels. The stables are the answer for houseguests who want a Texas experience without the drive to Weatherford.
  • If golf is your Saturday morning, Benbrook Par 3 Golf Course is a welcoming and accessible course perfect for beginners, families, and golfers looking for a quick round, and Whitestone Golf Club offers scenic fairways and a challenging layout. Par 3 pairs well with a Dutch Branch afternoon because both sit off Winscott Road.

For anyone hosting an event on the water, remember that a permit is required for activities occurring in the parks or on the lake, including bounce houses, water slides, weddings, tournaments, bands, DJs, church functions, and swimming pools of any size are not allowed. The Corps of Engineers office at 817-292-2400 handles it. Do it two weeks out, not two days.

A Late-Summer Rhythm That Actually Uses The Town

Here is what the next stretch can look like without leaving 76126.

Early August is your last window for a full-daylight lake evening. Take the Dutch Branch trailhead, walk the flat two miles out and back, and eat on a patio on the Boulevard afterward. Once the restaurant park opens, that patio has options that did not exist last summer. Until then, Lone Star Grill on Benbrook Boulevard and the long-standing chamber-listed spots hold the line.

Mid-August is registration season. Get the corn-eating slot before August 31. Enter a dog in the costume contest. If you ride, contact the Corps office about a Heritage Fest weekend permit if you are hosting any gathering that spills onto lake land.

Late August into early September is when the west side of town starts to matter more. Watch the Camp Bowie West retail center for the Rosebuds and Patch Cafe openings. If either lands in time, they become the pre-Heritage-Fest dinner move for households on that side of I-20.

September 19 is the day. Dutch Branch from mid-afternoon on. Pace yourself past the chuckwagon dinner so you actually make it to the street dance. Walk home if you live close enough. Drive slow if you do not.

The last week of September is a quieter reward. The Corps' 9 PM closures start to feel earlier. The trails are cooler. The restaurant park's patios will still be new enough to feel like a discovery rather than a habit.

If You Are Thinking About What Comes Next

Late summer in Benbrook is doing something it has not done in a while. It is holding a full weekend without asking you to leave. New corners, a fest that has been running long enough to feel earned, and a lake that most residents have not fully learned yet.

If you have been weighing whether Benbrook still fits the next chapter for your household, or whether the equity in your current home is doing what it should be doing while the town changes around it, that is a conversation worth having with a brokerage that follows this market week to week.
